Billy immediately bowed his head and said, SORRY GOD your euro is gone!

SHORT BUT SWEET: An atheist was out fishing in Scotland, when all of a sudden a huge Dragon type Amphibian began to emerge from the water. With snarling teeth it slithered closer to the atheist. In desperation he cried out, “Dear God, Please save me” All of a sudden, the heavens opened and a deep voice said, “I thought you didn’t believe in Me.” To that the atheist responded, “Give me a break, two minutes ago I didn’t believe in the Loch Ness Monster either”

SOME THOUGHTS FOR THE WEEK:

“Here are the two best prayers I know: ‘Help me, Help me, Help me’ and ‘Thank you, Thank you, Thank you’.” Anne Lamott

“I just don’t think I’m looking for the big moments in life anymore. It’s more the simple ones that make for a beautiful day now. Like the sun rising and the moon dancing and the wind singing and the leaves grooving, and kids laughing and music playing, butterflies twirling, heart-smiles staying…and me being present to witness all these little beautiful things. This is what makes for a happy and peaceful life, I’m sure.”   S.C. Lourie

“I do believe in a God, yes. But that’s as far as I want to discuss. If I get too detailed on some things that are personal like that, it gives people an easier way to alienate themselves from me and that’s all they are looking for now.” Timothy McVeigh

“You gotta try your luck at least once a day, because you could be going around lucky all day and not even know it.”    Jimmy Dean

“Changing the world is good for those who want their names in books. But being happy, that is for those who write their names in the lives of others, and hold the hearts of others as the treasure most dear.” Orson Scott Card

“Don’t spend time beating on a wall, hoping to transform it into a door.”    Coco Chanel

ONE SENTENCE SERMON: Sometimes you don’t get closure – you just move on.

While the father and son were seated, the father asked the son if he would say the prayer for the meal. The youngster nodded his head, and said that he would pray. The mother placed the last of the meal on the table, and sat down. The boy looked around the table at the food for a moment, and began to pray. He said, “God, I’m not sure what it is. But thanks anyway. And I’ll still eat it.”

SOME THOUGHTS FOR THE WEEK:

“One man has enthusiasm for 30 minutes, another for 30 days, but it is the man who has it for 30 years who makes a success of his life. Edward Butler

“You are not a graveyard. Stop opening your arms to those who are only looking for a place to rest their tired bones.” Pavana

“An adventurous life does not necessarily mean climbing mountains, swimming with sharks or   jumping off cliffs. It means risking yourself by  leaving a little piece of you behind in all those you meet along the way.”               Shawna Grapentin

“Before I got married I had six theories about raising children; now, I have six children and no theories.” John Wilmont

“Almost everything worthwhile carries with it some sort of risk, whether it’s starting a new business, whether it’s leaving home, whether it’s getting married, or whether it’s flying in space.” Chris Hadfield

“You’re either part of the problem, or part of the solution, you get to choose.”Eldrige Cleaver

MOTHER’S DAY: Little children can come up with some very  interesting ideas to celebrate Mother’s Day. Here are some of the best! Angie, 8 years old, wrote: “Dear Mother, I’m going to make dinner for you on    Mother’s Day. It’s going to be a surprise. P.S. I hope you like pizza & popcorn.” Robert wrote: “I got you a turtle for Mother’s Day. I hope you like the turtle better than the snake I got you last year.” Eileen wrote: “Dear Mother, I wish Mother’s Day wasn’t always on Sunday. It would be better if it were on Monday so we wouldn’t have to go to school.” Little Diane wrote: “I hope you like the flowers I got you for Mother’s Day. I picked them myself when Mr. Smith wasn’t looking.” And from Carol “Dear  Mother, Here are two aspirins, have a happy Mother’s Day!”

SHORT BUT SWEET: For weeks a six-year-old lad kept telling his first-grade teacher about the baby brother or sister that was expected at his house. One day the mother allowed the boy to feel the movements of the unborn child. The six-year old was obviously impressed, but made no comment. Furthermore, he stopped telling his teacher about the impending event. The teacher finally sat the boy on her lap and said, “Tommy, whatever has become of that baby brother or sister you were expecting at home?” Tommy burst into tears and confessed, “I think Mommy ate it!”

SOME THOUGHTS FOR THE WEEK:

“We cannot concern ourselves with what was. We must act on what is.” Monk Gyatso

“If you want to see what a society really believes in, look at what the biggest buildings on the horizon are dedicated to.” Joseph Campbell

“The wound is the place where the light enters you.” Rumi

“If you don’t go after what you want, you’ll never have it. If you don’t ask, the answer is always no. If you don’t step forward, you’re always in the same place.” Nora Roberts

“For the past 33years, I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself: ‘If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?’ And whenever the answer has been ‘No’ for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something.” Steve Jobs

ONE SENTENCE SERMON: Fate is like a strange, unpopular restaurant filled with odd little waiters who bring you things you never asked for and don’t always like.

SHORT BUT SWEET: Because the younger children at Fr. John’s school often forgot their sins when they entered his confessional, he suggested that teachers have the students make lists. The next week when one child came to confession, Fr. John could hear him unfolding paper. The youngster began, “I lied to my parents. I disobeyed my mom. I fought with my brothers and…” There was a long pause. Then a small angry voice said, “Hey, this isn’t my list!”

SOME THOUGHTS FOR THE WEEK:

“Are you going to be one of those guys who doesn’t quit until they find you dead in your office, face down in a pool of ink, surrounded by storyboards?”  Stan Lee

“You retain your health only so long as you are willing to forgive your stresses, shrug off adversity and adapt to new situations. Resistance to change always impedes the working of your immunity.”Robert Svoboda

“Faithless is he that says farewell when the road darkens.” J.R.R Tolkien

“Sometimes I look around my living room, and the most real thing in the room is the television. It’s bright and vivid, and the rest of my life looks drab. So I turn the damn thing off. That does it every time. Get my life back.”    Michael Crichton

“You can forget that other people carry pieces of your own story around in their heads. I’ve always thought – put together all those random pieces from everyone who’s ever known you, from your parents to the guy who once sat next to you on a bus, and you’d probably see a fuller version of your life than you even did while living it.” Deb Caletti

ONE SENTENCE SERMON: The past cannot be changed, forgotten, edited or erased; it can only be accepted.

Spring Time in Newmarket

Thursday, February 19th, 2015

Spring has arrived in Newmarket, Snow drops and Daffodils are starting to peak out of the ground, there’s a bit of a stretch in the evenings and today the center of town is packed full of stalls, horses and many other animals for the February Horse Fair.  There is something timeless about the biannual Newmarket horse fairs, similar fairs have been run here for hundreds of years.

Spring also brings the AGM for the Newmarket Community Development Association.  This was held in the meeting room in Scanlon’s bar on Tuesday night (17th of February) and saw the election of this years committee:

Chairman: Ollie Dugdale, Secretary: Linda Walker, Treasurer: Lisa O’Donoghue, PRO: Mary O’Sullivan.

The first big job of the year for the committee is the coordination of the St. Patrick’s day parade.  The Newmarket Parade has grown year on year and is always a great day in town.  Plenty of traditional music, dancing and craic.  Followed by the Coffee Morning in Hourigan’s High Street lounge which has run for many years now and is part and parcel of the Newmarket Paddy’s day experience.  Other events on in town over the few days will be viewable on the events section of this site.  If you’d like to get involved in the parade this year all are welcome.

This years Tidy Towns competition was also a topic for discussion at the AGM and the committee are determined to make a really big effort this year.  Some really great ideas suggested at the meeting.  There will be a kick off meeting for Tidy Towns 2015 in April.

A collection of handmade bird and butterfly boxes will be distributed around town over the coming days and weeks.  According to Joan Ann Brosnan, who is the wildlife officer in the Development Association “after valentine’s weekend is the correct time to put up bird boxes – love is in the air – at this time bids look for territories, mates and homes – they will not make the nest for another few months and lay eggs but will be in pairing mode and need to stake out territory and find the best nesting places. ”

The boxes will last for a number of years and will need to be cleared out each year of nest material to prevent bacteria spreading in September. Bluetits, great tits, coaltits, robins or sparrows could use them.  Also wrens would use them in winter to roost.

We’re hoping to add a lot of content to the site this year and are really interested in any photos new or old that people may have that they would like to share.  We’d also love to get some articles from people, anything that relates to Newmarket: maybe your own childhood memories, a bit of history or an anecdote, a song or a poem.  We’re hoping to do a few interviews also so if you’d be interested in taking part get in touch: contact@athtrasna.com

SOME THOUGHTS FOR THE WEEK:

“I would rather be alone with dignity than in a relationship that requires me to sacrifice my self respect.” Mandy Hale

“When you talk, you are only repeating what you already know. But if you listen, you may learn something new.” Dalai Lama

“A man sees in the world what he carries in his heart.” Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

“We are so obsessed with doing that we have no time and no imagination left for being. As a result, men are valued not for what they are but for what they do or what they have – for their usefulness.”  Thomas Merton

“I believe that the human spirit is indomitable. If you endeavour to achieve, it will happen given enough resolve. It may not be immediate, and often your greater dreams  is something you will not achieve within your own lifetime. The effort you put forth to anything transcends yourself, for there is no futility even in death.” Monty Oum

ONE SENTENCE SERMON: Being broken hearted is kind of like having broken ribs – from the outside it looks like everything is fine, but every breath you take hurts .

All that you sought and didn’t find is hidden in me,  waiting for you to search it but with more determination. All the good that you tried for and didn’t achieve is mine to grant when you have fewer conflicting desires. All that you dreamed but didn’t dare to do, all that you hoped but did not will, all the faith that you claimed but did not have ……these slumber lightly, waiting to be awakened by the touch of a strong purpose.I am your opportunity to renew your allegiance to Him who said, ‘Behold, I make all things new.’” I am the New Year.
